None of these is where locals go to dance, which happens at milongas, not seated shows. Among the shows, El Viejo Almacén has the strongest documented history: founded in 1969 by the singer Edmundo Rivero and declared a site of cultural interest in 1982, with a show-only ticket from €44.41.

There is no single best tango show in Buenos Aires. There are about a dozen houses selling much the same evening at very different prices, and the right one depends on how much of the package you want. We compared the eight with the most booking evidence in the Civitatis catalogue, field by field. We have not attended them, so nothing here judges the dancing or the music.

A tango show in Buenos Aires runs 75 to 105 minutes and starts late, between 21:00 and 22:00. What turns it into a four-hour evening is the dinner sold around it. Seven of the eight houses sell tiers: the show alone, the show with dinner, and one or more VIP levels, usually with hotel transfer. Entry prices run from €22.71 at Madero Tango to €93.27 at Café de los Angelitos.

Show sheets

One sheet per show

You book on Civitatis, the ticket platform, under its own terms.

Before you choose

How the houses differ here

  1. Start with the room. Tango Porteño and Palacio Tango are theatres. Palacio Tango's two rooms were reported at 380 and 220 seats, and Tango Porteño does not publish a figure. El Querandí is a restaurant room of 190 seats. Madero Tango, La Ventana, El Viejo Almacén and Café de los Angelitos are dinner-show houses that do not publish capacity. Café Tortoni is a café with a show room and no dinner format.

  2. Then decide about dinner, because it changes the price and the length of the night more than the choice of house does. The show itself is the same on every tier. Dinner is served before it, at 20:00 to 20:30, with pickups from 18:45, so a dinner ticket means about four hours out for 75 to 105 minutes of performance. The catalogue only publishes the lowest price per house, so compare tiers on the booking page for your date. As a guide, La Ventana's own site lists US$70 for the show alone and up to US$190 for dinner, show and wine tasting.

  3. The dinner tier often buys things other than food. At Tango Porteño, Madero Tango and El Querandí it is the dinner and upper tiers that carry the hotel transfer and the open bar, and the basic ticket has neither. At Madero Tango the tier also sets where you sit: show only is a shared side table for up to 10, and private tables in front of the stage exist only on the top tier. So the fair comparison is dinner tier against show ticket plus two taxis, your drinks and a restaurant meal eaten by about 20:30. If you would rather choose your own restaurant, the show-only tickets at Tango Porteño, Madero Tango, El Viejo Almacén and Palacio Tango exist for that, and Palacio Tango's includes two drinks.

  4. Last, check the refund terms and the clock. Free cancellation runs from 2 hours before (La Ventana) to 3 days before (Café de los Angelitos), with 12 hours at Madero Tango and 24 hours at most others. Shows end between about 22:20 and 23:30. If you book a tier without transfer, plan the ride home before you go.

Plan

The evening, step by step

  1. Before the show

Shows start between 21:00 and 22:00. On a dinner tier you eat at the venue from 20:00 to 20:30, with hotel pickups from 18:45. On a show-only ticket, eat first and finish by about 20:30. Café Tortoni has no dinner format at all.

  2. Arriving

With a transfer, the operator sets the pickup time and it can drift, so be ready early. Without one, the houses ask for 15 minutes (Madero Tango, Palacio Tango, La Ventana) to 30 minutes (Café Tortoni), and El Viejo Almacén wants show-only guests between 21:00 and 21:15. At Tango Porteño, Madero Tango and Café de los Angelitos the seat depends on the tier you paid for.

  3. The show itself

The performance runs 75 minutes at El Querandí and La Ventana, about 90 at most of the others and 105 at Tango Porteño. It is the same show on every tier. None of the eight houses publishes a rule on photos or an interval, so ask at the door.

  4. Getting back

Shows end between about 22:20 and 23:30. La Ventana and Café de los Angelitos include the transfer. Tango Porteño, Madero Tango, El Querandí, El Viejo Almacén and Palacio Tango sell it on some tiers only, and Café Tortoni offers none. The Subte closes at around the hour the shows finish, and earlier on Sundays, so without a transfer plan on a taxi or a ride app. The city tourist board points visitors to its own BA Taxi app, and buses run all night at longer intervals.

Where

Where the houses are

The centre (San Nicolás and Monserrat)

Four houses are in the downtown grid. Tango Porteño (Cerrito 570) and Palacio Tango (Florida 165, inside Galería Güemes) are theatres in San Nicolás. El Querandí (Perú 322), a 190-seat restaurant room, and Café Tortoni (Av. de Mayo 825), a café with a show room, are in Monserrat.

San Telmo

El Viejo Almacén (Av. Independencia 299) and La Ventana (Balcarce 431) are dinner-show houses in the old quarter south of the centre. El Viejo Almacén is a 15-minute walk from the nearest Subte station (Independencia, line C) and has the latest finish on the page, 23:30. La Ventana includes the transfer on every ticket.

Puerto Madero

Madero Tango is at Av. Alicia Moreau de Justo 2100, on the docks. No Subte line reaches Puerto Madero, so this is the house where the transfer tier or a taxi matters most. It has the earliest start, 21:00, and the lowest entry price, from €22.71.

Balvanera

Café de los Angelitos is at Av. Rivadavia 2100, west of the centre and away from the other houses. Every ticket includes the transfer, with the return reaching hotels around 23:30.

Common questions

How long is a tango show in Buenos Aires?

The performance lasts 75 minutes at El Querandí and La Ventana, about 90 minutes at El Viejo Almacén, Palacio Tango, Café Tortoni and Café de los Angelitos, and 105 minutes at Tango Porteño. With dinner and hotel transfer the whole evening takes three to four hours.

Is the dinner worth paying for at a tango show?

It depends on what the tier includes, so read it line by line. At several houses the dinner tiers are also the ones with hotel transfer, open bar and better seats, which the basic ticket lacks. The show is identical either way. If you only want the performance, a show-only ticket costs from €22.71 to €44.41 at four of the houses and leaves you free to eat where you like. We have not eaten at these venues and cannot rate the food.

What time do tango shows start?

Late. Madero Tango starts at 21:00, Tango Porteño and El Querandí at 21:30, Café de los Angelitos at 21:45, El Viejo Almacén and Palacio Tango at 22:00. Dinner is served from 20:00 to 20:30 and hotel pickups begin as early as 18:45.

Can children go to a tango show?

Yes. None of the eight shows states a minimum age, and seven sell child rates (the age bands vary, roughly 2 or 4 up to 10 or 12). Café Tortoni has no child rate. The real limit is the hour: the earliest show ends at about 22:20 and the latest at 23:30.

What should I wear to a tango show?

El Querandí is the only house that states a policy on its site: no dress code, smart casual suggested. The other seven do not publish one. Nothing in the catalogue asks for formal dress.

Can I cancel a tango show booking?

All eight offer free cancellation, with different deadlines. La Ventana allows it up to 2 hours before, Madero Tango up to 12 hours, and Tango Porteño, El Querandí, El Viejo Almacén and Café Tortoni up to 24 hours. Palacio Tango refunds 50% between 24 and 12 hours. Café de los Angelitos needs 3 days for a full refund and gives 50% until 24 hours before.
