First time in the city

Roxy Dinner Show

Roxy Dinner Show has the most evidence behind it: 97 reviews averaging 9.7, a Copacabana address, a show-only ticket from €67.55 with a welcome drink, and a venue that publishes its timetable. Its free cancellation ends 3 days before.

Ensaio de escola de samba

The samba school rehearsal is the only product here that is not staged for visitors: it is a carnival rehearsal in the school's own hall. The evidence is thinner than for the theatres (35 reviews, 7.5) and it does not run all year, so treat it as the less predictable option.

A night for two

Roxy Dinner Show

Roxy's Ticket + Dinner & Drinks tier gives a three-course dinner from the full menu and half a bottle of sparkling wine or wine each, in the room with the highest score here (9.7 from 97 reviews). It can be booked for one or two, with no minimum group.

With children

Ginga Tropical

Ginga Tropical is the shortest sit (about 80 minutes), is rated for all ages, has a child rate for ages 4 to 10 and includes the ride there and back, returning to hotels around 23:00. From €114.29 per adult it is not cheap, and families staying in Copacabana should compare Roxy's standard ticket, which has a child rate for ages 4 to 11.

Usual start times

Each bar runs from the start to the end of the show. Not published: Ensaio de escola de samba, Rio Scenarium

A samba show in Rio de Janeiro can mean three different evenings. One is a staged production of samba and regional Brazilian dance in a theatre (Roxy Dinner Show in Copacabana, Ginga Tropical in São Conrado). One is a visit to a samba school while it rehearses for carnival. One is a night of live bands in a Lapa music house, Rio Scenarium. We compared the five products the Civitatis catalogue sells for them, field by field. We have not attended any of them, so nothing here judges the dancing or the music.

Prices start at €50 for the samba school rehearsal and reach €128.79 for the Rio Scenarium night with a steakhouse dinner. Four of the five include hotel pickup and return, which is a large part of what you pay for. The exception is the plain Roxy ticket, from €67.55, where you make your own way to Rua Bolívar. Sambadrome parade tickets are a seasonal event and are not covered on this page.

Show sheets

One sheet per show

You book on Civitatis, the ticket platform, under its own terms.

Before you choose

How the houses differ here

  1. Start with the kind of night. Roxy and Ginga Tropical are seated productions with a fixed running order: Roxy's main show, Aquele Abraço, tours the five regions of Brazil, and Ginga Tropical does much the same with 24 dancers and 10 musicians in about 80 minutes. The samba school rehearsal is a working session in the school's hall (the quadra) that turns into a party, with an English-speaking guide. Rio Scenarium is a three-floor music house where two bands play and the audience dances. Only the first two are shows in the theatre sense.

  2. Then look at how you get there, because that explains most of the price gap. Roxy is in Copacabana, so guests staying nearby can book the plain ticket and travel a few blocks. Ginga Tropical is in a shopping-centre theatre in São Conrado, the rehearsal is wherever the school of the night is, and Rio Scenarium is in the old centre. Those three are sold only with pickup from South Zone hotels. If you are staying in Barra da Tijuca, Recreio or São Conrado, the Roxy product with transport is the one whose pickup list names those areas.

  3. Dinner works differently at each. At Roxy it is a three-course meal served in the room before the main show, with a band playing bossa nova, and it means arriving two hours earlier. With Ginga Tropical and Rio Scenarium the dinner is a buffet or rodízio at a separate churrascaria on the way: optional with Ginga, built into the price with Scenarium. Drinks are extra on all of these except Roxy's welcome drink and the half bottle on its top tier. The rehearsal has no food at all.

  4. Last, check the calendar and the refund terms. Roxy runs Wednesday to Sunday, Ginga Tropical was last listed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and Rio Scenarium opens Wednesday to Saturday. The catalogue says samba school rehearsals do not run all year and offers an alternative if there is none on your date. Free cancellation ends 24 hours before for the rehearsal and Scenarium, 48 hours before for Ginga Tropical and Roxy with transport, and 3 days before for the plain Roxy ticket. Ginga Tropical, the rehearsal and both transport products need at least two people.

Plan

The evening, step by step

  1. Before the show

With a plain Roxy ticket or the show-only Ginga Tropical ticket you eat first, since Roxy asks you to arrive by 20:00 and Ginga's pickup is at 19:30. The dinner options move everything earlier: 18:30 at Roxy, 18:00 pickup for Ginga. The Rio Scenarium night starts with its rodízio dinner, and the rehearsal has no meal, so eat before the pickup.

  2. Arriving

Roxy wants you at Rua Bolívar 45 thirty minutes before your slot to check in and be seated. For the three pickup products the operator confirms the time by email or WhatsApp the day before, and you wait in the hotel lobby 10 to 15 minutes early. The Rio Scenarium booking asks you to bring ID.

  3. During the show

Roxy and Ginga Tropical are seated; at the end of Ginga Tropical the dancers invite the audience to try a few steps. The rehearsal and Rio Scenarium are dance floors more than auditoriums, so expect to stand for part of the night. Roxy allows phone photos and short videos for personal use and bans professional cameras, tripods and GoPros.

  4. Getting back

Four of the five products drive you back, Ginga Tropical reaching hotels around 23:00. Only the plain Roxy ticket leaves you on the street at about 22:45, in Copacabana. The UK government's travel advice for Brazil says to book taxis through an official app and check the plate and driver, to avoid using a phone in the street, and to stay off city beaches after dark.

Where

Where the houses are

Copacabana

Roxy Dinner Show is here, in a former cinema at Rua Bolívar 45. It is the only show on this page inside the main hotel district, which is why it can be sold without transport. The metro has three Copacabana stations (Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos and Cantagalo).

São Conrado

Ginga Tropical plays in the Teatro Fashion Mall, a theatre inside a shopping centre at Estrada da Gávea 899, west of Leblon. São Conrado has a station on metro line 4, but the catalogue sells the show only with hotel pickup and return.

Lapa and Centro

Rio Scenarium is at Rua do Lavradio 20, in the old centre next to Lapa: a three-floor music house that gives its capacity as 2,000 people. The product reaches it by minibus from South Zone hotels after dinner elsewhere, and brings you back.

Common questions

How long is a samba show in Rio de Janeiro?

Ginga Tropical runs about 80 minutes according to press listings, and Roxy's main show is listed by the venue from 21:00 to 22:45. The evenings around them are longer: 3 to 4 hours for Ginga Tropical with pickup, 3.5 hours for a Roxy ticket with dinner, 4 hours for the samba school rehearsal, 5 hours for Roxy with transport and 6 hours for the Rio Scenarium night.

Is the dinner worth paying for?

At Roxy the dinner tiers buy a three-course meal in the room and a pre-show by the house band, at the cost of arriving by 18:30 for a main show at 21:00. With Ginga Tropical the dinner is a buffet at a separate steakhouse and moves pickup from 19:30 to 18:00. The stage show is the same either way. We have not eaten at any of these places and cannot rate the food.

Do I need to book ahead?

The plain Roxy ticket can be booked up to 2 hours before and Rio Scenarium up to 4 hours before. Ginga Tropical closes at 16:30 on the day, the rehearsal needs 18 hours and Roxy with transport needs 24 hours. None of them runs every night, so check the days first.

Can children go to a samba show in Rio?

The plain Roxy ticket, Ginga Tropical, the samba school rehearsal and the Rio Scenarium product all list child rates and no minimum age in the catalogue. Roxy with transport is for ages 12 and over. The hour is the real limit: the earliest of these ends at about 22:45, and the Scenarium night lasts six hours.

What should I wear?

Roxy's site says there is no strict dress requirement, recommends smart casual and suggests a light jacket because the room is cooled to 20 to 22°C. We found no published dress code for Ginga Tropical, the samba school rehearsal or Rio Scenarium.

Can I cancel a samba show booking?

Yes, all five have free cancellation, with different deadlines. The samba school rehearsal and Rio Scenarium allow it up to 24 hours before, Ginga Tropical and Roxy with transport up to 48 hours, and the plain Roxy ticket only up to 3 days before. After the deadline there is no refund on any of them.
