Fado in Lisbon: fado house or fado show?

One is a concert you fit in before dinner, the other is the dinner, and the catalogue covers the first better than the second.

Short answer

Book a staged show if you want the music in under an hour, for €13.99 to €23, and dinner wherever you like. Book a fado house if you want the evening itself to be the event: a table, a meal and two to three hours. The catalogue has one dinner house, from €50, and the long-established houses take reservations directly.

Show sheets

You book on Civitatis, the ticket platform, under its own terms.

Two different evenings

A staged fado show in Lisbon is a concert. You sit in rows facing a stage, nobody serves food, and you are out in 50 to 60 minutes. It starts in the late afternoon or early evening.

A casa de fado is a restaurant. You book a table and eat, and several times in the evening the lights go down for a set of three or four songs. Talking and eating stop while someone sings. The night lasts two to three hours and most of the bill is the meal.

We read the booking terms on 4 October 2026 and have not attended any of these, so nothing here judges the singing.

The staged shows in the catalogue

There are two, a few minutes apart in Chiado and Baixa. Neither publishes its capacity.

  • Fado in Chiado: 50 minutes, from €23, Monday to Saturday at 19:00, plus 17:30 from April to October. 918 reviews at 9.1. No minimum age. Cancel up to 24 hours before.
  • Lisboa em Fado: about one hour, from €13.99, with a glass of port and a short video on the history of fado. 254 reviews at 8.8. Children from 4. Seats first come, first served. Cancel up to 48 hours before.

The dinner house in the catalogue

Associação do Fado Casto, on the Alfama hillside, is the one product where you sit at a table in a fado house. The booking lasts 3 hours 15 minutes and costs from €50, with a full dinner and drinks (wine, beer, soft drinks or water).

It runs a fixed version of the format. Dinner comes first, then a one-hour concert with a singer, Portuguese guitar and classical guitar, so the music is not spread between courses as described above. It has 264 reviews at 8.5, the lowest score of the three.

The small print: the menu is set and the catalogue lists no vegetarian alternative, the venue is not wheelchair accessible, and we found no website run by the house.

The famous houses are not in the catalogue

Clube de Fado, Sr. Vinho, O Faia, A Severa, Adega Machado, Parreirinha de Alfama and Mesa de Frades are not sold as products in the catalogue we work with. They take reservations directly, by phone or on their own sites. If one of those names is the reason for your trip, book it with the house.

That also means we hold no checked prices, minimum spends or cancellation terms for them, and we will not guess. Ask the house what the evening costs per person, whether dinner is required and how late you can cancel.

What a catalogue booking adds is narrower: a fixed price known in advance, a confirmed seat and free cancellation up to a stated deadline.

How to decide

On a tight schedule or with children, take the staged show. The 17:30 session at Fado in Chiado ends by 18:20 and the 19:00 by 19:50, and under-4s go in free. Audiences are expected to stay silent during the songs, and Lisboa em Fado states this as a rule, so a short early show is the easier one with a young child.

On money, compare like with like. The €50 at Associação do Fado Casto covers dinner, drinks and the concert. Against a €23 concert ticket, the extra is roughly the price of a meal out.

If amplification matters to you, the organiser of Lisboa em Fado describes its room as microphone-free. At Fado in Chiado a guest review quoted on the venue's own site says the last number was sung without microphones, which implies the rest is amplified. The dinner house does not say.

Common questions

Can I do a fado show and a fado house on the same night?

Yes, the times allow it. Fado in Chiado ends by 18:20 or 19:50 depending on the session, which leaves the evening free for a table at a house you booked directly. Check that house's seating time before you buy the concert ticket.

Do I have to eat at a fado house?

At Associação do Fado Casto, yes: dinner is part of the only ticket in the catalogue. For houses that are not in the catalogue the rule varies, so ask when you reserve whether a meal or a minimum spend applies.

Is the staged show a lesser version of fado?

It is a different format, with rows of seats, a stage and, at Fado in Chiado, images of Lisbon projected behind the performers. We have not attended and do not compare the quality of the singing.

Which fado option suits children?

Fado in Chiado admits all ages and has a child rate for ages 4 to 11. Lisboa em Fado admits children from 4. Associação do Fado Casto has no minimum age, but 3 hours 15 minutes is long for a young child.
